Before diving into what to eat before a workout, it is important to know when to eat. For instance, eating a giant meal right before tumbling in a jiujitsu class may be a bad idea.
Working out can take extensive energy, especially when your workout is a high-intensity Brazilian Jiujitsu class. During an Active Jiu Jitsu class, you will need a lot of energy for mat cardio and muscle building.
What is the Best Time to Eat Before a Workout?
As a general rule, we have found that eating a small snack 30-60 minutes before working out will give you optimum performance. Try to plan your day so that your body has a few hours to rest after eating a large meal before working out.
Now that we know when to eat let’s get to it! Here is what to eat before jiu jitsu.
Fruit and Greek Yogurt
Fruit and yogurt are a classic combination that will give you the ultimate balanced snack before your jiu jitsu class. Greek yogurt has significantly more protein than regular yogurt, making it a great snack that can help you build muscles during your workout. It also has lots of probiotics to balance your gut health and calcium for bone health. Fruit is also rich in carbohydrates, potassium, and antioxidants which are also important for muscle growth and boosting energy levels.
