MARTIAL ARTS FOR BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS!

How Our Classes Work

Self defense

Our self-defense program is for the student who have no experience in martial arts and for those interested in learning how to defend themselves from a possible aggressor.

Each class begins with a warm-up where students learn basic movements. All of these movements are important for the student to learn to come out from under a bigger and stronger person without using force.

After the warm-up, the instructor explains and demonstrates a technique. Each student will practice this technique with a partner for 3-5 minutes. The instructor will try to put a more experienced person with a less experienced one. This allows for the experienced person to answer any questions the less experienced person might have.

Our self-defense curriculum consists of 24 lessons with 3-5 techniques per lesson. Each lesson is repeated 3 times so that you have adequate time to learn and practice the techniques. It is very normal that you may not be able to make the movements correctly in the first few classes, but as you continue to come and repeat the techniques you will see an improvement in your movements.

After 30 minutes of demonstration and practice, we take a 2 minute break to allow you to go to the bathroom or drink water. Then we resume class. When there is 15 minutes left of the class, we focus more on drilling. Drilling is when we combine all the techniques we have learned in that day’s class and practice without resistance from a training partner. During the last 5 minutes we focus on physical fitness by completing pushups, sit-ups, stretches, and leg work.

Each class lasts 1 hour, however we encourage you to go at the speed you want and your body allows. Do not overdo it, especially at your first few classes, and do not worry if someone is going faster or slower than you. If you continue to come and participate, we promise you will improve in no time!

Intermediate Class

The intermediate class is the largest class, with students from all levels attending. Due to the nature of this class, we try to pair more experienced students with those with less experience. There is a greater focus on technique and practice compared to the self-defense class.

This class begins with a 7 minute warmup then moves into the teaching and practice of the first technique. The professor will teach 3 techniques over the course of the class and provide the students with 5 minutes of practice after each technique is taught. The techniques taught in this class are considered sport Jiu Jitsu. In the self-defense class the expected reactions are from people who have no experience in fighting, this makes it much easier for us to execute the movements. However, in sport Jiu Jitsu we apply the same techniques but now our opponent has experience in fighting, specifically in Jiu Jitsu. Sport Jiu Jitsu requires strategy and emotional control so that you can flow, always progressing until you reach the final goal which is completion.

After practicing the techniques, students will be given a 2 minute break to use the bathroom and/or drink water. During the specific training of this class, we ask our students to resist 50% but let their partners perform the movements. This allows you to practice the techniques and think correctly under pressure. The class spends the last 5 minutes focused on physical fitness by completing pushups, abdominal work, leg work, and stretches.

Each class lasts 1 hour and while this is an intermediate class, we still encourage you to go at the speed you want and your body allows. Do not overdo it and do not worry if someone is going faster or slower than you. If you continue to come and participate, we promise you will improve in no time!

Advanced Class

The advanced class is designed for students who are blue belts or higher. However, white belts who feel comfortable with the pace of this class may participate, as we have created a comprehensive teaching method for all levels.

The advanced class begins with a 7 minute warmup then moves into the teaching and practice of the first technique. The advanced class differs from our self-defense and intermediate classes in that students learn and practice only 2 techniques per class and spend the majority of class sparring. Students are given a 2 minute break to use the bathroom and/or drink water and upon their return begin sparring in 5 minute intervals until the end of class.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sparring does not include traumatic impact like punching, kicking, etc. However the student still needs to maintain control, especially when it comes to one’s breathing.

Competition Class

The competition class is for students who want to test themselves in a competitive nature or for those who want additional practice.

In this class students learn the rules of scoring and various strategies on how to win a competition match. Students are able to use this time to ask technical or strategic questions.

During the competition class students also spar without rest time in order to create better endurance and simulate a high level competitive event.

No Gi Class

At Active Jiu Jitsu, a student who wishes to participate in the No Gi class must first complete the self-defense course. This is due to the experience needed to be able to safely and fully participate in this class.

The No Gi class focuses on falls, leg braces, and guillotines. It is very popular among No Gi fans, MMA fighters, and those who want to learn more advanced self-defense.

Private Class

The private lesson is an exclusive product. During a private class you will receive one hour of undivided attention from the instructor who will assist in improving your Jiu Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an art where each student may have a unique approach, so a private class can help refine your unique style.

On average about 20 students attend any of our normally scheduled classes, however during a private class it is just you and the instructor. Anyone who wants to improve any part of their Jiu Jitsu game can schedule a private lesson with any of our instructors. We would love to help you reach your personal needs and goals!
