Why is jiu jitsu amazing for child development?

Any sport can provide several benefits to children, but why is jiu jitsu the best?

At the surface jiu jitsu provides physical benefits such as combating childhood:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cortisol levels due to stress

It also aids in gross motor development and fine motor development. It improves:

  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Speed
  • Endurance
  • Coordination

More than just physical benefits

Jiu jitsu provides more than just physical benefits. It also helps children grow in self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-love. In jiu jitsu, children are not taught how to fight, instead they are taught how to diffuse the situation and defend themselves as a last resort. This gives those children who are bullied at school the confidence and assurance to face their bullies and stand up for themselves.

The mat is also a place for socialization. Although it may seem like an individualistic sport, jiu jitsu requires teamwork so that everyone can reach their potential. Children practice the techniques learned in class with one another and help their partners improve by providing constructive criticism. Children will create friendships with their teammates that are often times much stronger than those they create at school.

Jiu jitsu also emphasizes the concepts of respect and humility. Students practice being respectful by listening and learning from not only the professor, but from one another. The concept of humility is evident in how each student reacts to defeat or victory.

Students who lose a match do not get upset or lash out, but instead use it as a learning opportunity to improve their techniques. Students who win a match do not gloat or speak down to others, but instead continue to work hard in class and help their partners improve as well.

Whatever reason you decide to sign your child up for jiu jitsu, please know that they will have fun while learning. We begin and conclude each class with recreational and interactive activities so that the students can have fun with one another and with their professors. Jiu jitsu is not just another sport, it will enrich your child’s life in so many ways. We can’t wait for you and your child to come experience the best BJJ in Houston! We know they will love it too!
